The Loop Effect: Why We Get Stuck (And How to Break Free)

January 28, 20254 min read

Hey there!

Remember last time when I mentioned that problems are just loops in disguise?

Well, grab your favorite beverage because we're about to dive deep into what that actually means.

(And no, this isn't one of those "everything is connected" philosophy lectures – though technically... no, let's stay focused!)

The Loop That Started It All

You know that feeling when a song gets stuck in your head?

Not just for a few minutes, but all day long?

That's a loop.

Or when you keep replaying that awkward thing you said three years ago at 2 AM?

Also a loop.

But here's where it gets interesting.

These aren't just random annoyances – they're actually showing us something fascinating about how our minds work.

And more importantly, they're showing us why we (and our clients) sometimes feel stuck in patterns we can't seem to break.

The Science Behind the Spiral

Back in the 1920s, a brilliant psychologist named Bluma Zeigarnik made a fascinating discovery.

She noticed that waiters could remember complex orders perfectly until the orders were completed.

After that? Poof!

The information vanished like my chances of ever making another glass pendant, for now. (Still not taking orders, by the way!)

This became known as the Zeigarnik Effect, and here's why it matters: our minds hate unfinished business.

They hate it so much that they'll keep looping back to it until we find resolution.

Sound familiar?

Your Problems Are Playing on Repeat

Think about it – when you're dealing with a problem, what happens?

  • You believe something about the situation

  • You imagine how it's playing out

  • Your body responds with emotions and feelings

  • You experience it as your reality

  • And that feeds right back into what you believe

It's like a DJ playing the same track over and over, except this playlist isn't getting you ready for a party – it's keeping you stuck.

Breaking the Loop

Now, here's the cool part (and why I get so excited about this stuff).

Just like a real loop, these mental patterns have a structure.

And once you can see the structure, you can change it.

It's like having the blueprint to a building – suddenly you know exactly where to place the support beams.

But – and this is important – you can't break a loop you can't see.

That's why so many traditional approaches to change work feel like trying to fix a car engine while wearing a blindfold.

You might eventually hit the right spot, but you're going to waste a lot of time and energy in the process.

The First Step to Freedom

Want to know if you're stuck in a loop? Here's a simple test:

Do you find yourself -

  • Having the same thoughts about a problem over and over?

  • Feeling like you're "rehearsing" conversations in your head?

  • Noticing the same patterns showing up in different areas of your life?

Congratulations!

You've just spotted a loop. (Don't worry – awareness is actually the first step to breaking free.)

What Comes Next?

Here's the thing about loops – they're not actually the enemy.

They're more like... well, imagine them as messengers from your unconscious mind, trying to get your attention.

And once you know how to listen to these messages? That's when the real magic happens.

But we'll save that for next time.

Because learning to spot loops is one thing – learning to enter them (and help others break free) is where things get really interesting.

Stay tuned for the next post, where we'll dive into how to recognize when someone's unconsciously asking for help. Trust me, it's going to blow your mind.

Until then, try spotting the loops in your own life. You might be surprised at what you find!

See you in the loop!

P.S. What loops have you noticed in your life? I'd love to know more!

(And no, the irony of ending a post about loops by asking you to think about loops isn't lost on me... or is it? 😉)
