The Conversation That Changes Everything
Hey Future Looper!
There's this moment I'll never forget.
I was sitting at Elliott's Fairgrounds, a café in Norfolk, Virginia, with my little "Free Coaching" sign, wondering if anyone would actually stop by.
(Yes, this was after my glassblowing days, and no, I still don't sell pendants!)
That's when Sarah* sat down.
"I don't know why I'm even here," she said. "But something made me stop."
What happened next changed everything I thought I knew about transformation.
The Conversation That Wasn't
Here's what I didn't do:
Ask about her "pain points"
Launch into my coaching spiel
Try to prove my expertise
Pull out any techniques
Promise her results
Instead, I just said, "Tell me more about that something."
And then... I waited.
The Magic of Space
The silence felt eternal. (It was probably about 8 seconds, but who's counting?)
Then something fascinating happened.
Sarah's eyes shifted slightly to the left. Her breathing changed. And she said something that seemed completely unrelated to why she sat down:
"You know, I had a bird when I was little..."
Now, this is where most coaches would get confused. Most therapists would redirect. Most consultants would get back 'on track.'
But I had accidentally stumbled onto something important.
The Hidden Pattern
You see, what Sarah was doing wasn't random at all.
Her unconscious mind was offering up exactly what needed to be addressed – just not in the way most of us are trained to recognize.
That "random" story about her childhood bird?
It contained the exact metaphor she needed to understand her current situation.
The Art of Following
Here's what most people get wrong about transformative conversations:
They think they need to:
Lead the conversation
Direct the insight
Create the breakthrough
Push for change
Control the process
But real transformation happens when you:
Follow the energy
Notice the patterns
Allow the insight
Hold the space
Trust the process
The Natural Flow
As Sarah talked about her bird – how it would never leave its cage even when the door was open – something shifted.
Her eyes widened slightly. Her posture changed. Her voice got quieter.
And then she said, "Oh..."
That single syllable contained more transformation than hours of traditional coaching could have achieved.
Why This Works
The power of this approach comes from three key elements:
Safety - When you're not pushing for change, people feel safe to explore
Space - Real insights need room to emerge naturally
Trust - Both in the process and in the person's innate wisdom
The Framework
Want to create these kinds of conversations? Here's the basic framework:
Listen deeply (not just to the words)
Follow their natural flow
Notice the subtle shifts
Hold the space for insight
Trust what emerges
Sound simple? That's because it is.
Sound easy? That's where most people get stuck.
Your Turn
Here's a challenge for you:
In your next conversation (professional or personal), try this:
When someone tells you something, instead of thinking about what to say next, just say:
"Tell me more about that..."
And then wait.
Really wait.
See what emerges in that space.
What's Next?
Next time, we'll dive deeper into how to handle what comes up in these spaces – because trust me, once you start creating this kind of space, some amazing things will emerge.
See you in the loop!

(*Name changed for privacy, but the transformation was real.)
(And yes, I notice that urge you're feeling to immediately try this out... that's your unconscious mind recognizing something important! 😉)
